In 1885 William A. "Snowflake" Bentley was able to capture the first "photomicrograph" image of a snowflake. He pioneered a photography technique using a bellows camera attached to a compound microscope to photograph individual snow crystals on a black velvet background. His work came to the attention of the National Geogaphic Society and he published two articles in 1904 and 1923- showcasing his extraordinary photography while also illustrating the basic science of snow. Icy blue snowflakes drift across the dinner plate and other pieces in the pattern.
